Day 1 – Fes to Merzouga (Overnight in Desert Camp) [467 km]
Begin your journey by crossing the scenic Middle Atlas Mountains, with the first stop at Ifrane, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its Alpine-style architecture and refreshing climate. Next, pause at the cedar forests of Michlifen, home to wild macaque monkeys, perfect for photos and a moment to enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Continue along the picturesque Ziz Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with lush date palm oases. By late afternoon, arrive at the golden sands of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga, where your unforgettable desert adventure begins.
Day 2 – Merzouga to Rose Valley or Ouarzazate
Wake up early to witness a magical desert sunrise before setting off for the day. Explore the stunning Todra Gorges, with towering canyon walls ideal for photography. Walk through the verdant oasis of Tinghir with a local guide, discovering lush agriculture and the historic Jewish quarter, while learning about the region’s rich Berber carpet-making traditions. Continue to the fragrant Rose Valley, stopping at a local cooperative to explore the cultivation of Damask roses and their use in crafting beauty products. Arrive at your accommodation in either the Rose Valley or Ouarzazate by evening.
Day 3 – Rose Valley or Ouarzazate to Marrakech
After breakfast, visit the world-renowned Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Enjoy a guided walking tour through this ancient fortified village, famous for its distinctive earthen clay architecture and cinematic history. Then, journey through the majestic High Atlas Mountains, taking in breathtaking views along the impressive Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel (or the nearest accessible point).
